St Margaret’s College

Following earthquake damage, Leighs Constructiono was engaged to build a two-storey block containing 12 new classrooms, associated amenities and a library. The two-story building is approximately 1000 m² per floor.

Ninety-two screw piles were driven 25 metres into the ground, the foundations of a structurally very strong building. The building is a pre-cast concrete structure, with a structural steel portal frame first floor and roof.

Designed to the upper standards of the building code, the block is characterised by a high-end carpentry finish, including double-glazing and thermo-mass concrete panelling. This is complemented with a multitude of local (New Zealand timbers, for example) and international (European floor coverings) finishes.

Minimising disruption to school time, and being acutely aware of the safety of the number of people who would be about during recreation time, was key to the successful implementation of this build. Having a work-site located beside the school's temporary chapel, also had to be factored into day-to-day works.

Completed both on time and within budget, this project has recently been awarded a Silver Award at the Commercial Project Awards 2014, which were proudly attended by some of the clients associated with this project.
