New World Stanmore Road

This project comprising of extensive alterations to the existing building and earthquake repairs at the New World Stanmore Road site, was secured by negotiation as a result of Leighs Construction's ongoing relationship with Foodstuffs South Island Ltd.

Work included full grout injection ground remediation over an approximate 2,000m² area. All serviced departments, including butchery, delicatessen, bakery, produce and liquor were upgraded and replaced. Ceilings throughout the supermarket were also replaced, and a complete upgrade of drains, stormwater and sewerage was also undertaken. Sections of the roof and skylights were replaced and an external repaint undertaken. Final siteworks involved a complete relevelling and space planning of the car park area and landscaped spaces.

As the supermarket, located on a busy road had to remain operational throughout the project, Leighs Construction staged works not only to allow for the supermarket to remain open in parts, but also to ensure the supermarket maintained useable storage and work areas for staff.

Part of a franchise, the specification required Leighs Construction to follow in accordance with the New World franchise features and level of finish. For example, the bakery, butchery and fresh produce areas had Nuthane as floor finish and “green” lighting was installed throughout.

At every stage of the project, where the client’s operations were effected, an alternative display, storage or workspace was provided. Extensive planning from the outset resulted in the internal floor for the main shop area being split into 16 separate stages. As a result, much of the construction work was done at night, when it had the least effect on both staff and customers.

To allow for ease of access during open hours, an alternative entrance was created to allow separate access to the workforce and reduce public disruption. Ultimately the trading of this facility was largely uninterrupted.
