Operation Completed: Burwood Hospital Redevelopment06 July 2016

On Sunday 29th May, Burwood Hospital opened its doors to the general public, with 15,000 people passing through one of the largest health projects New Zealand has seen.

The building is home to the latest advances in aged health care, providing patients and staff with the technology and environment required for ensuring the highest level of care is provided now and into the future.

Leighs Cockram JV and subcontractors have been working tirelessly on site, and have successfully achieved CPU for the new build. This was a significant milestone for the team, after 2 ½ years of hard work and dedication, resulting in a high standard, state-of-the-art health facility.

Patient transfers from The Princess Margaret Hospital have been completed, and 140 patients now occupy the new wards block.

Judging from the feedback received at the public open day, the hard work and determination shown by all involved has not gone unnoticed, with countless positive reviews received.

Leighs and Cockram staff have gelled together seamlessly on this project, providing a positive working environment. The various sporting contests along the way have fuelled the banter between the cross-Tasman rivals.

An awesome achievement for all those involved!

Spanning 32,000m2 over three levels, the building encompasses:

  • Back of house, including kitchen, distribution centre, loading dock and plant rooms
  • Bike shed linking to the new back of house
  • Wards block, including 230 beds over three levels
  • Outpatients block, including consult rooms, procedure room, and a blood test centre, which will accommodate approximately 80,000 outpatient visits a year
  • Administration/staff level, including open plan office space, meeting and quiet rooms
  • PSE Block (psychiatric care for the elderly)
  • Radiology department housing a new MRI and X-Rays
  • Front of house, including main reception and café
  • Two corridors linking to the existing building
  • New main entrance and carpark off Burwood Road

The project team has overcome many obstacles and challenges in reaching completion of the high profile project, including:

  • Managing 500 plus subcontractors on site each day during peak times
  • Liaising with the Client for staged handover/occupancy, whilst surrounding construction works are being completed, including 5 stages of CPU
  • Keeping up to date with the 7,000 plus contract instructions received throughout the life of the project
  • Planning, construction and commissioning of the $15M boilerhouse as a variation to contract, including two new boilers from Austria.
