Leighs Construction enters new year with solid foundation in Auckland market10 February 2016

We’re growing our footing in the Auckland construction market, having commenced work on the ground works for the B:HIVE at Smales Farm and demolition works for the new Skhy Apartments project. Work on a new PC2 lab at Middlemore Hospital commenced in November last year.

On 1st April 2015, Auckland Operations Manager Jeff Vivian was our only staff member permanently located in Auckland. Nine months on, we have 32 staff in Auckland, and over $100 million of work in progress in the city. With a strong national focus, staff located in the South Island office in Christchurch work alongside teams in Auckland and other centres across the country to ensure our company’s culture and philosophies are transferred across the company as it continues to grow.

We’ve had a great reception in Auckland, and the team are excited to be working on such large scale and high profile projects for a number of highly respected clients.

“In what’s a somewhat overheated market, we believe our core offering provides a unique solution to our clients and their projects. Our in-house carpentry and concrete capabilities add value in that we aren’t flooding an already pressured market – we are adding to it by providing our own resources,” explains managing director Anthony Leighs.

The B:HIVE at Smales Farm on the North Shore is a 10,000m2 innovative, five-level building designed by BVN and Jasmax architects. Stage one of three, the B:HIVE will be the first building in New Zealand to be designed under the principles of the International Wellness Standard.

Daniel Henderson, General Manager, Smales Farm Management, says the company’s vision is to transform Smales Farm into a thriving and diverse urban community. “The B:HIVE is a critical step towards achieving this vision and will see Smales Farm continue to evolve as a leading destination for working, lifestyle and community events in Auckland. Leighs bought into this vision from the start, so we’re excited to be partnered with them”, says Daniel.

We’re hugely excited to be involved with this project at such an early stage in the B:HIVE’s development. “As a company, we are highly experienced in early contractor involvement (ECI) contracts and are presently working on two large office and retail developments (ANZ and BNZ Centres) of a similar nature in Christchurch’s CBD. We have been working very closely with Smales Farm for some months now and are thrilled with the way both the project and our relationship with Smales Farm is developing,” Anthony.

Across Auckland, Skhy Apartments is a repurposing project that will see the former Winstone Tower at the top of Auckland’s Khyber Pass in Newton converted into 37 luxury apartments over 12 storeys. Designed by award winning Cheshire Architects, and set at one of the highest vantage points in Auckland, the apartments will have some of the best protected views in the city.

The project to build a new PC2 lab at Middlemore Hospital to replace existing laboratories commenced in November 2015. The site is located in a future-proof shell on level one of the new Harley Gray building. This is a logistically challenging project, as the team are working in a live hospital, with 14 operating theatres directly above, and a 24-hour neonatal intensive care unit directly through the other side of the wall.

We’re proud of our position as one of New Zealand’s best commercial construction companies, and we work across a wide range of sectors.

“At present, our projects include a science laboratory at the University of Otago, a major redevelopment at Burwood Hospital, a private health centre, several office and retail projects, showrooms and yards for a motor dealership, a state-of-the-art music centre and a highly innovative community centre. Last month, a Leighs Construction team headed back down to the ice in Antarctica, where they are working on extensions to the Hillary Field Centre. It’ great to have such a dynamic and varied portfolio of work, and being awarded these high profile Auckland projects is testament to our reputation and expertise.”
